What Islands are in Hawaii?
Oahu
Oahu is the main island and is home to Waikiki, Honolulu and Diamond Head. When people
say they are flying to Hawaii, they usually are referring to Honolulu International Airport.
Some of the local landmarks include the USS Arizona Memorial and the Polynesian Cultural
Center.
Maui
Maui is the second most populated island. There are three distinct vacation destinations
on Maui:
- Kaanapali (which includes Lahaina, Kahana, Napili and Kapalua) on the West side of the
island.
- Wailea (which also includes Makena) which is on the south side of the island south of
Kihei.
- Kihei (which also includes Kamaole and Maalaea) which is on the south side of the
island north of Wailea.
Kauai
Kauai has three distinct vacation areas:
- Princeville (which includes Hanalei) has great golf courses but receives over 400
inches of rain per year.
- Wailua/Kapaa (located near the main city of Lihue) is the most central place on the
island to stay.
- Poipu (located about 30 minutes from Lihue) is world known for the great Poipu Beaches.
The Big Island of Hawaii
The Big Island of Hawaii has three distinct vacation areas:
- The Kona Coast (which includes Kailua-Kona) was the first vacation destination
developed on the Big Island.
- The Kohala Coast (which includes Waikoloa and Mauna Lani) is the newest vacation
destination on the Big Island.
- Hilo is an area that does not offer vacation condominium accommodations.
